This weekend @BFC: Movie Night, Trustees, Worship and PECSC!

Dear Friends: There's a lot happening this weekend at Berkeley Friends Church. Here's the rundown: 1) Tomorrow, Friday, 1/24, Friday Night at the Movies returns, with the 1951 French drama Diary of a Country Priest. Director Robert Bresson's masterful adaptation of Georges Bernanos's novel tells the story of a dedicated priest in a rural village whose best efforts only seem to alienate him from the very population he's supposed to be serving. In French, with English subtitles. See attached flyer for more details. ADMISSION IS FREE! Refreshments at 6:30 PM, film at 7:00, discussion to follow. 2) On Sunday, 1/26, the Trustees will have a called meeting at 9 AM. Dear Friends: This Saturday, 1/18, at 1 PM, we will gather to celebrate the lives of Ellen & Gordon Hatcher. We could still use some help with setup (setting up tables, tablecloths and decorations). The meetinghouse will be open by 11:30 AM. Then, on Sunday, 1/19, the Singing Ensemble will rehearse at 9 AM. Then Sunday School classes for children and adults meet at 10 AM. We gather for worship at 11 AM, seeking God's presence together with an extended period of open worship, corporate prayer, and songs of praise from the Ensemble and the congregation. Dear Friends: I was just talking to a Friend who observed how feverishly both motorists and pedestrians seem to rushing about lately. I know that I certainly have been, as I try and get everything on my list checked off. There are so many things to get done, I am finding it a real challenge to keep some things from dropping off of it entirely--especially finding regular time to seek God's presence. It's one of the ironies of our age that Advent, a season which is supposed to inculcate patient waiting and anticipation, has been so overwhelmed by gift-buying and party-attending and a frenzy of so many other things. Dear Friends: Here's what's happening this weekend at Berkeley Friends Church and elsewhere: 1) On Saturday, 12/14, we'll have the bimonthly Harvest Day for the Berkeley Neighborhood Food Project. All of the donations from the various neighborhoods will be coming in to the Food Pantry that morning. Volunteers are always appreciated to receive, weigh, sort and store the donations! You can come by as early as 9:30 AM and there will be things to do through 1 PM. Also, if you're participating in BFC's "neighborhood" and didn't bring in your bag last Sunday, you're welcome to bring yours by any time between 10 AM and 12:30 PM. 2) Also on Saturday, but not at BFC this time, is the quarterly gathering of the Christian Friends Conference--Western Region (CFC). Dear Friends: I hope everyone had a happy and joyous Thanksgiving holiday with friends and family yesterday, and that you took some time to give thanks and meditate on how God is working in your lives right now. I am thankful for this "church family" and for the opportunity that you have granted me to walk alongside you as we grow in faith. Dear Friends: Here is what's going on this Sunday, 11/24, and next week, at Berkeley Friends Church: 1) Don't forget that the Berkeley Half Marathon begins at 8 AM on Sunday and will mean street traffic delays on Sacramento, San Pablo, MLK, and Shattuck at University Avenue. Traffic will be able to cross University, but expect delays on these arteries between 7:30 and 10:00 AM. Also, don't use the University exits from Interstate 80; try the Gilman exits instead. If you can get here by BART, bicycling or walking, you should avoid the delays! Dear Friends: Here is what's going on this weekend at BFC: 1) On Saturday, 11/16, from 10 AM to 12 noon, pantry volunteers will be packing more Thanksgiving bags in the fellowship hall. This will be for the second half of the month. BFC folks are welcome to help, although it would be best to check with Pantry director Tami Groves to make sure that she still needs people. Dear Friends: It's a little bit slower pace this weekend at Berkeley Friends Church, with just the usual Sunday happenings: On Sunday morning, 11/10, we will begin with the Stewardship and Finance Committee, meeting at 9 AM. Then, at 10 AM, our Sunday School groups for adults and children will meet. We gather for worship at 11 AM, which will include a message on Luke 20:27-38. Fellowship time follows worship, and then the SInging Ensemble will meet at 1 PM. It's going to be a busy weekend at Berkeley Friends Church--we hope to have you with us! 1) This coming Saturday, 11/2, you are invited to meet Colin Saxton, General Secretary of Friends United Meeting (FUM), at a series of informal meals. FUM is a global fellowship of Friends that we are part of, that supports ministries of communications, evangelism, global partnerships and leadership training in many places in the world.
