It's a full weekend at Berkeley Friends Church: 1) Our bimonthly Friday Night at the Movies returns tomorrow night, Friday, 8/21. This time it's the Saudi Arabian film Wadjda, about an an enterprising Saudi girl who signs on for her school's Koran recitation competition as a way to raise the remaining funds she needs in order to buy the green bicycle she has her heart set on. ADMISSION IS FREE! Refreshments at 6:30 PM, film at 7:00 PM. Discussion follows the screening. 2) Then on Sunday, 8/23, we begin with Sunday School classes for children and adults at 10 AM. The end of the month is often busy at BFC, and Tenth Month is no exception: 1) Tomorrow, Friday, 10/24, is our monthly Friday Night at the Movies. This month's film is "Brother Sun, Sister Moon," Franco Zeffirelli's 1972 biopic of Francis of Assisi. Zeffirelli concentrates on the early story of Francesco, a boy who renounces his wealthy upbringing to serve God, and gathers around him a crew of misfit disciples. They are also joined by Clare, who is also sympathetic to the plight of the poor. With music by Donovan, this lavishly photographed film is a treat for the senses, and is not often seen. This film uses personal stories, colorful graphics and an array of sobering statistics to illuminate the plight of the 49 million Americans struggling with food insecurity. Dear Friends: Here is what's happening at BFC this weekend: 1) Tomorrow, Friday, 2/28, is our monthly Friday Night at the Movies, with the 2003 documentary Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin. Rustin, an African American Quaker, was one of the seminal figures of the civil rights movement, as a close advisor to Dr. King and the architect of the 1963 March on Washington. Rustin was also open about his homosexuality in a period far less accepting than the present. This time around we are privileged to have a very special guest: the film's co-director, Nancy D.
