Category Archives: Movie Night

Every fourth Friday from January to October, we invite the community to a monthly film screening. Our “Friday Night at the Movies” series presents thought-provoking, spiritually resonant films that reflect issues and values of interest to area Friends and the community.

This weekend @BFC: Movie Night, Memorial Service, Sunday School & Worship, PECSC

Dear Friends:

Here are this weekend’s events at Berkeley Friends Church:

1) It seems like the last one was just last week, but tomorrow, Friday, 7/26, is our monthly Friday Night at the Movies. This month we present the 2009 biopic Creation, which captures the legendary scientist Charles Darwin in a period of intense mourning–and expansive intellectual discovery–following the untimely death of his young daughter, Annie. Darwin’s work on his groundbreaking book On the Origin of Species and his questioning of God’s existence parallel one another, much to the chagrin of his devout wife.

ADMISSION IS FREE! Please invite your neighbors and friends. Refreshments at 6:30 PM, film at 7:00 PM. Discussion follows the screening.

2) On Saturday, 7/27, we will gather with family and Friends of our member Andrew Secrest to give thanks for his life together. Memorial service begins at 11 AM. All are invited for a potluck meal following the service. We will need some help with setup, both on Friday night following Movie Night and on Saturday morning beginning at 9:45 AM.

3) On Sunday morning, 7/28, we will gather for Sunday School for adults and children, at 10 AM. Meeting for worship begins at 11 AM, with song, prayer, a message, and expectant waiting upon the Lord. Fellowship time follows worship, and then the Peace, Environment, and Christian Social Concerns Committee will meet at 1 PM.

Please join us for learning, fellowship and worship!

This weekend @BFC: Movie Night, Knit & Crochet, Singing Ensemble, John Maurer speaking, & more!

Dear Friends:

Here are this weekend’s events at Berkeley Friends Church:

1) Tomorrow, Friday, 6/28, is our monthly Friday Night at the Movies. This month’s offering is the 2008 documentary  At the Death House Door. This sobering film examines the state of the death penalty in Texas (which, just this week, executed its 500th inmate since 1976). We follow the remarkable career and spiritual journey of prison chaplain Carroll Pickett. Initially pro-execution, Pickett became an anti-death penalty activist after serving 15 years as the death house chaplain in the infamous “Walls” prison unit in Huntsville.

ADMISSION IS FREE! Please invite your neighbors and friends. Refreshments at 6:30 PM, film at 7:00 PM. Discussion follows the screening.

2) On Saturday, 6/29, the Knit & Crochet Fellowship meets at 11 AM in the Fellowship Hall. Come see what others are working on and start a project for yourself!

3) On Sunday, 6/30, at 9 AM, the Singing Ensemble will gather for rehearsal. At 10 AM, our regular Sunday School classes for adults & children will convene. Meeting for Worship begins at 11 AM, with a message from John Maurer and a presentation from the Singing Ensemble. Fellowship time, with refreshments from local producers, follows worship.

Please join us for fellowship, learning and worship!

This weekend @BFC: James’s Journey, worship, PECSC, and more

Dear Friends:

Here are this weekend’s events at Berkeley Friends Church:

1) Tomorrow, Friday, 5/24, is our monthly Friday Night at the Movies. This time we present the 2004 drama James’s Journey to Jerusalem. In his remote African village, young James is chosen to undertake a mission: a pilgrimage to holy Jerusalem. But Israel is no longer the Holy Land that James and his people imagined. Arrested for entering the country illegally, James’s journey takes him through the cruel heart of our globalized economy. See attached flyer for more details.

ADMISSION IS FREE! Please invite your neighbors and friends. Refreshments at 6:30 PM, film at 7:00 PM. Discussion follows the screening.

2) On Sunday, 5/26, at 10 AM, our regular Sunday School classes for adults & children will convene, including the Quakerism class. Meeting for Worship begins at 11 AM, including a meditation on Romans 5:1-5. Fellowship time follows worship, and then the Peace, Environment, and Christian Social Concerns Committee meets at 1 PM.

Please join us for fellowship, learning, worship and service!

This weekend @BFC: Taking Root, Stanley Ngesa farewell, worship, PECSC, and more

Dear Friends:

Here are this weekend’s upcoming happenings at Berkeley Friends Church:

1) Tomorrow, Friday, 4/26, our monthly Friday Night at the Movies presents Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai.
This powerful 2008 documentary tells the inspiring story of Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai. Maathai’s simple act of planting trees grew into Kenya’s “Greenbelt Movement,” a globally-recognized mobilization of women to rally against deforestation, poverty, and government corruption, which eventually became a national political force that helped to bring down the 24-year presidency of Daniel Arap Moi.

ADMISSION IS FREE!  Refreshments at 6:30 PM, film at 7:00 PM. Discussion to follow.

Also: Some of you may not know that our Friend Stanley Ngesa will be returning to Kenya–possibly indefinitely–this coming Monday, 4/29. Because of a commitment made prior to his receiving the ticket home, he will not be able to be with us for worship on Sunday, but he does plan to be at the movie on Friday. So if you’re free, please come by to say farewell and enjoy the film with us!

2) On Sunday, 4/28, at 10 AM, our regular Sunday School classes for adults & children will convene, including the Quakerism class. Meeting for Worship begins at 11 AM. Fellowship time follows worship, and then the Peace, Environment, and Christian Social Concerns Committee meets at 1 PM.

Please join us for fellowship, learning, worship and service!
